My second tutorial for pictures ( studio fake) like "Catoga II for king-size cats":[link]
I have no studio background and a very small location in the cat house of the cat aid organisation. So I have no place for Studio-flashlight with umbrella or Softboxes and studio background systems.
So I used 2 paperboards (Bristol board 700 * 1000mm). One for the ground an one for the background.
Later i will remove the gap in Photoshop.
In the fist picture you can see the most important part. My assistant. She plays with the kittys ( so any toys in the picture) or stroke the cats to calm down (till fall asleep ) )
She make noise or moves that the cat looks in the direction i need.
The light is always a problem for me as you can read in my first tutorial:
At the moment i like to use a old Flashgun ( heirloom from my father ). After a lot of shots many people told me that old flashes can destroy digital cameras by high voltage
So i buy a low priced digital radio wireless trigger and save my camera
In this way i am free in positioning the flash and control the light set in a very easy way. I never used the flash directly to the cat. I used it indirect. This means i flash to the wall across from the cat or the ceiling. In rooms with a lot of paint and wood I'll try to used another white or matt silver paperboard for the flashlight.
For some (few) Places I have no solution for the lightning So i will use ISO 1600 and my 50mm / 1.8 lenses....
The camera works in manual modus and I used the histogram to control the lightning. The adjustment of the
flashgun doesn't work well, so i adjust the ISO and the aperture.
cats are so difficult. i discovered this when i was doing a shoot for a sculpting project called the artist book [link]
i was trying, and often failing, to photograph my friends kitten for the poses, as when they are that small the rarely keep in one place long enough to press the shoot button.
you do such great work getting the shots you do. and also with your hamster. the shots you get are amazing, as they too are notorious for wriggling. mine was nicknamed Miss Wrigglebum, as she couldnt sit still.
Oh em gee ...... that is my cat , lol . I swear to god - i am sitting with my cat taiko in my lap just now ... and that is the absolute spitting image of him.
Id guess that my cat is a little younger than this one - but the markings are identical .... even the brown and white markings on the nose .... >^.^< x x
Thanks a lot And yes, it is very hard, especially when you have my models Most photographers cat-models were kitten from breeders who were taken to exhibitions and something like that. They have no problems with foreign people and no fear... My models were unwanted and abandoned. They were often traumatized and very fearful, so not the best conditions But with love, everything is possible...
