Description

Often I get the question : "Can I use the camera-flash to take pictures of my cat..."
Fist answer: No, It hurts and I hear that the flash can destroy the eyes of night-animals like hamsters. But you can use an indirect-flash"
The next question: "What is indirect light" ?
Now I make this Tutorial to describe the ways you can use your internal camera flash and what is indirect light...

First Picture: Without flash
I create a low light situation and use a doll as a dummy for the animal ( No animal testing ). I put a Puppet eye, the mirror ball and some other stuff in the setting to show you the effects of the lightning (In cat eyes you can see nearly the same as in the mirror ball.
I take the picture with hand and it gets a lot of movement = motion-blur and an moving object like an animal gets much more motionblur.... So I need more light

picture 2: internal flash only:
The light gets direct to the eyes (hurt) and produces strong shadows behind the objects. It hurts in the eyes and looks ugly....

picture 3: diffuser
You can use a tissue, transparent paper etc. in front of the flash.
It makes the point of light bigger . So it is not so much light on an single point. This way looks nearly the second picture but it soften the shadows behind the objects.

picture 4: reflector
A not transparent white Object 45° in front of the Flash
This is an indirect flash. The light don't hit the eyes. It gets to the ceiling and gets back in a very diffuse way. This doesn't hurt the eyes.

picture 5 Reflector and diffuser in one
I used a folded paper and get a mix of 3 and 4

picture 6: a mirror
It doesn't diffused the light so much. You can see the shadow of the hello Kitty (on my girlfriends mirror) on my ceiling.
You can change the direction of the mirror to bring the light in the position you need :-) In the last picture I rotate the mirror and the light hits the wall.

Try it by yourself :-) It works better in smaler rooms. It doesn't work in rooms with black or darken walls and ceiling or outdoor.....
And see the eyes in other pictures to get Informations about the lightning the photographer has used.

Any Questions or suggestions, Tips, tricks and Infos to this theme ?

I hope this little Tutorial was helpful for you

greetings Oliver :-)
